Trevor Mugoya

Trevor Mugoya is a research specialist in the Sethuraman Lab at San Diego State University. His educational background is in biotechnology, botany, genetics, and bioinformatics. Trevor hails from Uganda, where he began his professional career at the Uganda Virus Research Institute as a strategic intern with a focus on bioinformatics. During his time there, he was involved with an interdisciplinary collaborative team in conjunction with researchers at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, where he contributed to the development of a reproducible workflow for detecting insecticide resistance in targeted mosquito genomic sequence data. This work inspired Trevor to pursue graduate studies in bioinformatics at SDSU. While attending, he founded SDSU’s first academic student organization centered on bioinformatics, with the goal of connecting students, alumni, faculty, and industry professionals to share experiences, skills, and resources to support professional development toward careers in computational biology or related fields. In his role as a research specialist and CIP fellow, Trevor works with his colleagues in the biology department at SDSU to scale their genomic and population genetic analysis to HPC. Trevor is a lifelong learner and has always been fascinated by the intersection of biology and computer science. Away from his desk, he loves experiencing San Diego’s restaurant scene and discovering small-batch coffee roasters to pick up fresh beans for moka pot brewing sessions.
